All about the Bhaba Pass and Kinnaur Kailash Trek

Starting from Manali in the Kullu Valley, we will cross the Rohtang Pass and then head east of the Chandra Valley. Our trek begins in Sagnam and ends in Chitkul, crossing over several passes, one in particular being the Bhaba Pass. You will notice the change in the landscape as it changes from a barren landscape of Spiti to lush green forests en route to Chitkul. We will then reach the Baspa Valley, where you will be able to see the beautiful views of Kinnaur, before heading to Shimla and further on to Delhi.

Bhaba Pass and Kinnaur Kailash Trek

Day 1

Arrival in Delhi

Guests will be received at the airport followed by a transfer to a hotel, where you will be staying overnight.


Day 2 

Journey from Delhi to Manali

Travelling Time: 14 hours

Altitude: 2000 m / 6,561 ft.

We will begin our journey with an early drive through the most fertile states of northern India (Punjab and Haryana). By evening time we will have reached in Manali. Overnight stay in hotel.


Day 3 

Free day in Manali

Overnight stay in hotel.


Day 4 

Journey from Manali to Lossar

Travelling Time: 6-7 hours

Altitude: 4050 m / 13,287 ft.

We will drive upstream along the left bank of the Beas River and travel through several villages until we reach the Rohtang Pass (3950 m / 12,959 ft.) and follow the rough road towards the east of the Chandra Valley. We will then drive to Kunzum Pass (4700 m / 15,419 ft.). We then descend for the next 11 km to the first campsite before Lossar Village. Overnight stay on campsite.


Day 5 

Journey from Lossar to Kibber via Kaza

Travelling Distance: 50 km

Altitude: 4200 m / 13,779 ft.

After breakfast we will visit the Gompa of Lossar and the village before hitting back onto the road passing through several villages. We will spend a short visit in Kaza, where we will then leave to visit the famous monastery perched high on a pyramid-like mountain, which belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Kibber is one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the region. We will also visit the village and it’s Gompa. Overnight stay in a camp.


Day 6 

Journey from Kaza to Mikim (Sagnam via Dhankar)

Travelling Time: 7 hours

After an early breakfast, we will drive to Dhankar; the ancient capital of the Spiti King. The most incredibly situated Gompa is perched high on a barren rocky mountain slope. We will then enter the Pin Valley, known to be full of wildlife. Gungri is the main centre of the Nyingmapa sect in Spiti. Overnight stay in a camp.


Day 7 

Trek 1 – Sagnam to Tilling

Trekking Time: 4-5 hours

Altitude: 3500 m / 11,482 ft.

Trek will begin with a walk through rocky terrain to the left, offers wonderful views of the Pin Valley below. The trek goes along the high banks of the river for a couple of hours, going over rocky land, meadows and cultivated fields, up to the village of Tilling. Tilling is located at the confluence of the Kuokli Gad and the Pin River. Overnight stay in a camp.


Day 8 

Trek 2 – Tilling to Mud Purkha

Trekking Time: 5 hours

Altitude: 3600 m / 11,811 ft.

The trail follows the Pin River for a while, before a short steep climb over scree slopes, followed by a gradual climb up the hillside and along the vast meadows covered with great varieties of mountain flowers and berries. The village of Mud lies across the Pin River. The village’s Gompa is set impressively on a cliff between two streams. Overnight stay in a campsite.


Day 9 

Trek 3 – Mud Purkha to Base of Bhaba Pass

Trekking Time: 5-6 hours

Altitude: 4400 m / 14,435 ft.

The day begins with a gradual climb, followed by a steep ascent on scree rubble, which brings us below of the Bhaba Pass. The campsite will be opposite the bank of the stream, where we will stay for the night.


Day 10 

Trek 4 – Base to Podal Thatch over Bhaba Pass

Trekking Time: 6-7 hours

Altitude: 4890 m / 16,043 ft.

For most of the day, the trail will be rugged as we will be walking over moraines, screes and boulder fields, with a final push through snow fields to reach the top of the Bhaba Pass. After crossing the pass, a steep descent will be made to reach the campsite on the bank of the Bhaba River. The vast grass pastures attract the shepherds from Kinnaur, who bring their flocks of sheep and goats to graze. Overnight in camp.


Day 11 

Trek 5 – Podal Thatch to Mare

Trekking Time: 5-6 hours

Altitude: 3500 m / 11,482 ft.

With a gradual descent down to the valley, the trail widens as you reach at the junction of the two streams. We will then cross the stream and keeping to left of it, we will then continue until we reach the valley floor, which is usually covered by wild flowers during August and early September. The campsite is situated on a beautiful glade amidst prime cedar forest.


Day 12 

Trek 6 (and drive) – Mare to Recongpeo

We will descend through an incredible mixed cedar forest until we reach to the Kafnu Village, where transport awaits for you for the drive to Recongpeo. Overnight stay in a guest house.


Day 13 

Trek 7 – Recongpeo to Lamber

Trekking Distance: 12 km

Altitude: 2896 m / 9,501 ft.

Drive to Thangi, with a gradual trek along a stream until we reach in the beautiful campsite of Lamber.


Day 14 

Trek 8 – Lamber to Charang

Trekking Distance: 12 km

Altitude: 3500 m / 11,482 ft.
We will trek through different terrains via Surting.


Day 15 

Trek 9 – Charang to Lalanti

Trekking Distance: 11 km

Altitude: 4421 m / 14,504 ft.
Lalanti is a beautiful place for camping with its varieties of wild flowers that are native to the area.


Day 16 

Trek 10 – Lalanti to Base of Charang

Trekking Distance: 6 km

Altitude: 4550 m / 14,927 ft.

The trail goes through moraines and boulders, until upward we will reach base camp; a camp situated on a glacier field of moraines.


Day 17 

Trek 11 – Base to Chitkul over Charang Pass

Trekking Distance: 9 km

Altitude: 4950 m / 16,240 ft.
Two hours of steep track over rocky terrain, will then bring us to the Charang Pass. A beautiful steep descent until Chitkul, will take us to the last vilage of the Baspa Valley before the Indo - Tibetan Border.  We will camp near the village.


Day 18 

Journey from Chitkul to Sangla

Travelling Distance: 23 km
Located in the Baspa Valley, is one of the most beautiful valleys of Kinnaur; dominated by Kamru Fort, which you can visit and its village also. Overnight stay on a camp or in a guest house.


Day 19 

Journey from Sangla to Shimla via Sarahan

Travelling Distance: 250 km

We will drive to Sarahan; the summer capital of the Rampur Bushahr. The Bhima Kali Temple is a big attraction where you can get magnificent views of the Shirkhand peaks. Rampur is the erstwhile Himalayan Kingdom of Rampur Bushahr and offers a rare insight into customs, religion, art and architecture of its people. We will drive via Narkanda, which offers ski slopes with training facilities during the winter season. Shimla is magnificently encompassed by dense forests of Oak, Pine, Fir and Rhododendrons. Overnight stay in a hotel.


Day 20 

Shimla

After breakfast we will climb to the Jhaku hill to visit the Hanuman Temple (the monkey God) with a visit to the museum and the advance study hall too. You will then return back to the hotel for lunch. You will have a free afternoon where you can visit the mall. Overnight stay in the hotel.


Day 21 

Train or Bus Journey: Shimla to Delhi

Travelling Distance: 470 km

Upon arrival in Delhi, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight stay in a hotel.


Day 22 

Flight Departure: Delhi

You will be given the opportunity to explore around Delhi, as you will be free, until in the evening you will then be transferred to the Indira Gandhi International Airport where you will depart to your onward destination.
